parent pep-talk: back-to-college resources

Every year of college is a transition – not just freshman year.
That sentence becomes a mantra for my college mentees at the end of every summer. Everything from where you live, sleep, eat, who you hang with, and how you spend your time changes.
For both moms and daughters, this is a big change, and feelings related to this big transition pop up in places we don’t expect like:
  • big reactions to little things
  • less patience
  • avoiding certain to-do’s
  • more scrolling
  • changes in sleep
I want to make the college transition easier so here are a few mentor resources:
1:1 Mentorship for College Students:

Your daughter heading off to college can be both exciting and overwhelming for you both. Mentor sessions provide the support, confidence, and clarity your daughter needs while giving moms peace of mind. Mentorship helps girls:
  • Develop strategies to manage stress and anxiety, so she stays calm and collected, no matter what life throws at her.
  • Feel good about herself, enabling her to make choices from a centered place.
  • Handle social situations, resolve friendship conflicts, and date without losing herself.
Does this sound like the skills and support you want your daughter to have? Set up a time to chat with me to learn more!

parent pep talk: “last weekend as a family” pressure

If you have a college student leaving for school soon and have been hearing yourself say, “This is our last week (or weekend) as a family,” I’m issuing a gentle PSA: the last week as a family is a crazy time! It’s okay to just let it be a chaotic, messy, full weekend. Let’s deescalate this together and take the pressure off of ourselves!

Mind Body Medicine ⁣

Back-to-school can stir up lots of feelings and it’s basically been the focus of all my sessions since the beginning of August. A topic I’ve shared with my students is the mind body connection or how your thoughts and emotions can affect your physical condition. Not as a replacement for medical advice, but whenever I feel out of sorts in my body, I try to think of the emotional component in a literal way. Examples: ⁣

A friend said she had no appetite and I asked, “What’s eating you up?”⁣

I had heartburn and my mom asked me, “What’s burning your heart?”⁣

A student had a neck ache and I asked, “Is anyone in your life being a pain in the neck?”⁣

My hip flexors were super tight and I asked myself, “Where am I being inflexible?”⁣

Mindful questions can help you see yourself or situation from a perspective that maybe you didn’t consider before. Pay attention to how you feel physically. Butterflies in your stomach, tension headaches, tight neck and shoulders can all indicate built up feelings. Your body talks to you all day long, you just have to listen. ✨📸 by @maja_bee
