Who’s in your Inner Circle?

Who’s in your inner circle? I think about this a lot as I believe that it’s so important to be discerning about whom you go to for guidance. If a business has a Board of Directors for a company’s growth and well being, why wouldn’t you have one for yours? It’s more than just a great group of friends (and you guys know I love my #dwnycoven). I have many different mentors that help me on a range of topics from advising on my work, to more importantly, supporting my inner well being. Do you have a Personal Board of Advisors? Everyone needs one.

Dispelling College Myths: What to Expect When you’re a College Freshmen

Today is a post dedicated to dispelling college myths. Whether you’re coming home from your freshmen year or gearing up to go, this is for you!

I love working with college freshmen. It’s such a transformative stage of life that can be both totally thrilling and wildly overwhelming. Here are a few topics that I’m always helping girls work through.

Myth #1:

You’ll be Instantly happy and this is the BEST TIME of your LIFE.

True, college can be great. I LOVED college, but cut yourself a break. Especially for freshmen, you are in a new place, squeezed into a room with a stranger, facing new academic, social, and emotional challenges. It is okay to feel like you are having a time.

Myth #2:

You’ll Meet your Best Friends First Semester Freshmen Year

Slow your roll. You don’t actually see who everyone truly is until second semester then the real personalities come out. I made one of my best friends my senior year so don’t write people off just because they didn’t live on your floor freshmen year.

Myth #3

All your High School Friends are Loving Their College Experience

Do not compare your real life to the social media life of your high school friends. I’ve said this time and time again: Everyone is Lying to you on Social Media (including me). You don’t have the full story. You don’t know everything that’s going on. People only show you what they want you to see. It’s such a small segment of what’s actually happening. There is a huge chance that they probably feel the exact same amount of overwhelmed you do.

College is a major life change. These are things I wish someone told me! I feel that I sought out mentors when I applied to internships and jobs for the first time. I could have really benefited from mentorship before even heading off to school. To talk through any of these topics or for more information please feel free to reach out!
Love,

Maggie

I am in Awe & Why you Should be Too

I heard from a lot of girls that they had the back-to-school scaries and I felt it too. Getting into the swing of things can be difficult after break (and now a snow day).

So I decided to make a list of all the resources I had for girls to help make their transition easier, but it turned into a moment where I began to reflect on what I have created. It reminded me of when I used to choreograph for dance. I would hear music and be able to see how I wanted everyone to move in my mind. After months of practice, it was complete on stage. What was once in my head, had become something greater than myself with the help of others. It conjured awe and that’s what looking at my mentoring practice feels like for me. I am in awe.

Last spring while I finished up school, I started to babysit a precocious two year old. I would try (and fail) to define awe. When we would look at the clear New York City skyline from Hoboken, I’d try to convey awe in terms of wonder. One night we chased a big full moon. Awe in terms of vastness. How I wouldn’t see him for a week and by the next time I was over, he’d have all these new words in his vocabulary. Awe from being amazed. This is what I feel when I look at the girls I’ve mentored. The feeling of being blown away, largely thanks to all of you.

I encourage everyone to seek out moments of wonder, not only because it feels good, but studies have even found, “connections between the experience of awe and enhanced critical and creative thinking faculties, improved health, a sense of embeddedness into collective folds and an increase in pro-social behaviours such as kindness, self-sacrifice, co-operation and resource-sharing,” (Psychology Today).

Thank you for all the awe and wishing you a 2018 full of wonder.
